Watch the world go by as you cruise down the Mississippi with Lazy River Blues, a slow blues number in F major with a lazy swing, ideal for intermediate level pianists (grade 3 ABRSM).
The opening melody features a smooth laid-back right hand with chromatic movements and blues notes. These 'calls' are answered by left hand 'responses' in swung quaver/eighth notes. The trick to achieving the classic slow blues swing 'feel' is to treat the quavers/eighth notes almost exactly as a triplet:
In bar 13, remember to keep the left hand accompaniment chords light and short. Â Also, savour those rests between each phrase... no need to rush, as the rests are just as important as the notes!
Lazy River Blues offers an excellent opportunity to further develop phrasing, accidentals, tempo and syncopation within a cool jazz-blues style.
