Grab a musical re-fuel with Pit Stop Hop, a swinging duet in C major for beginner primo players who are working towards the Grade 1 standard (ABRSM).
Motoring along at a steady 136 bpm, the catchy opening melody in the primo moves into pole position on beat 2 of the bar with a repeated rhythmic figure. The same rhythm is then echoed in the left hand a few bar later.
To simplify things for racing newbies, the primo player can play the first 4 bars with just the right hand, and then the next 6 bars with the left hand. The last 2 bar 'run' can then be played with both hands in the first and second time bars.
The middle section can also be split between the hands in a similar fashion - try experimenting and see what works for you.
Once you can play the primo part both hands together, try performing the piece with the play-along backing tracks. There are 4 MP3 audio tracks which come with the printable piano sheet music, including a slow-tempo practice backing track for the primo player. If you listen carefully, you'll be able to hear the car horn halfway through!
Pit Stop Hop reaches the chequered flag after a D.C. al Coda, ending with a cheeky acciaccatura grace note flourish in the right hand (waving to the crowd!).
With special thanks to Josie Swallow who came up with the fun title :).

“Pit Stop Hop” is wonderful piece that I will be using for my students who will be giving an end of summer duet recital. This is a great teacher-student duet, but I will be using it for two siblings who are at different levels. I have several of Olly’s pieces and they are all so much fun. Olly, please keep up your good work of composing great music for us and our students!

A well balanced duet, and very effective. Only small changes of hand position needed, so very manageable once comfortable with notes in F position. Children love it 👍🏻
