Here's a fun way to practice your contrary-motion technique, helping your hands to get used to going in opposite directions!
Rocksteady Reggae* is a bouncy reggae with straight quavers (i.e. not swung), for established beginner pianists at about Grade 2 (ABRSM) standard. This sheet music is best enjoyed with the fun play-along backing tracks, which come with the sheet music download in MP3 format, including a slower tempo practice backing.
The style of this piece is actually in a genre called 'rocksteady', which originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. This was the next step on from 'ska', which features faster off-beats, and a precursor to the slower tempos found in reggae. Rocksteady was the dominant form of music in Jamaica for nearly two years, recorded by many artists who would go on to develop the reggae genre.
I hope you enjoy Rocksteady Reggae. Just watch out for the occasional bars where your left and right hands actually move together in the same direction!
*Please note - this piece has been renamed! It was previously titled Contrary Motion.
