Description

SOS is an exciting rock style piano solo in C minor, ideal for intermediate pianists at about the Grade 3 (ABRSM) standard.

This piece features syncopated rhythms, most of which are matched in both hands. To help you get the hang of these rhythms try clapping the opening melody at a slow tempo, ideally with a metronome to keep a steady beat. Alternatively, clap the rhythms of each hand whilst listening to the slow tempo practice backing, which comes with the sheet music as an MP3 download. Practising these clapping exercises several times will help the syncopation to become more natural.

After the driving opening melody, the middle section of SOS modulates briefly to C major (perhaps a rescue party is on it's way?!). The chord progression then moves through a cycle of fifths in each bar, arriving back at C minor at which point the left hand gets to show off with a funky bass riff, leading back to the original melody.

The 'SOS' Morse code distress signal (three dots, three dashes, three dots) was first introduced in Germany in 1905 as part of their national radio regulations. Officially, the letters of the code don't actually stand for anything. However, in popular culture 'SOS' has become known as an abbreviation for 'Save Our Souls' or 'Save Our Ship'.

This piano sheet music comes with a performance recording, a play-along backing track and a slow tempo practice backing track. If you listen to these tracks carefully, you might be able to hear the Morse code 'SOS' distress signal!
