Description

Get On The Ball with this exciting samba duet in Ab major. This piece will suit advanced pianists (both primo and secondo parts) at about ABRSM Grade 5 and higher.

The tempo for this duet is in 'cut common time', or 2/2 with the tempo marking at minim (half note) = 124 bpm... so it goes at quite a lick!

The primo part plays the melody in unison octaves and sixths, accompanied by the secondo's swaying samba syncopated rhythms.

After the opening melody and middle section, a surprise 'two hands' black notes glissando leads into an improvisation section for the primo player. This is a chance to 'make up' some rhythms and melodies accompanied by a repeated 'vamp' in the secondo part.

I've suggested some notes that will 'work' in this improvisation section - but remember to keep it simple. If in doubt, choose only one or two notes and use these to make up some percussive rhythms with one, or both hands (e.g. in octaves).

Remember also that there is no such thing as a wrong note when improvising - just have fun trying out different ideas. Check out the performance MP3 which comes with this piano sheet music and features an example improvisation.

On The Ball comes with a play-along backing track for the primo player, as well as a slow tempo backing track to help you get up to speed.
