Pickled Onions is a fun and jazzy piano piece in C major, ideal for established beginners at the grade 2 (ABRSM) level who are enjoying their first steps in jazz.
This piece features a walking bass line in the left hand and blues 'crushed' notes in the catchy melody.
In jazz, as in any genre, silence between the notes is just as important as the notes themselves. Pickled Onions has several of these 'counting opportunities' and so is excellent practice for developing a strong sense of tempo.
Remember to swing the quavers!

This looks to be a great beginning jazz piece, fun to play and to listen to, with strong rhythms and easy swinging syncopation. I like the use of silence, which is just as important as the notes. Will be good to reinforce that concept. Also teaches a basic walking bass line, good intro to that. This is a catchy tune, as is much of his music!

I chose Pickled Onions for a very motivated late beginner, and he was up for the challenge! He really enjoyed the walking bass line and the swung rhythm, and I was happy that he got to practice contrary motion and a some sophisticated sounding jazz rhythms. I will definitely add Pickled Onions to my student jazz repertoire list for future use! Ollie has done it again!
