Description

Take a relaxed trip to Jamaica, the birthplace of ska music with Sugar & Spice. This fun duet for 4 hands is ideal for beginner primo players who are working towards their Grade 1 (ABRSM) level.

The ska genre came along in the 1950s and was the precursor to reggae and rocksteady. Its blend of Carribean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm & blues is recognisable by its off-beat walking bass lines and up-beat tempos.

To keep things sweet and simple, the primo part in Sugar & Spice is played mostly in separate hands with only a couple of instances where the hands play together. The secondo accompaniment features the classic off-beat ska style and should be played lightly so as not to drown out the primo player.

Once you've got the hang of the notes, there are several fun dynamics to enjoy throughout the piece. Articulation is another key area on which to focus, particularly with the staccatos and slurs as these will help to establish the ska 'bounce'.

This tasty piano sheet music comes with four MP3 audio tracks:

  • a performance recording
  • a play-along backing track for the primo,
  • a slower tempo play-along version, which is great for practising before moving up to the marked tempo, and
  • a play-along backing track for both players.

Enjoy your Sugar & Spice piano treat!

A great introduction to duet playing as well as playing something more rhythmical than crotchets! Works well on its own while the piece is being learned and is fun for the teacher too when the pupil is ready.
