Time for a spooky piano moment - meet The Ghost at the Grand Hotel, a jazzy piano solo in the key of G minor, ideal for intermediate players at about the Grade 4 (ABRSM) standard.

The slower tempo introduction is played with straight quavers and rises and falls in dynamics to sets the scene. You can almost imagine something creeping up the stairs, or maybe it's just room service?

Then we're into the mysterious melody played in a light jazz swing style with swung quavers. Watch out for the chromatic bars (ghostly moans!) and be sure to emphasise the dynamics throughout the piece to get the full effect.

The left hand has a couple of solo 'breaks' in the middle section, followed by scary diminished 'rolled' chords which rise to a crescendo - just like in the old horror movie sound tracks (feel free to add maniacal laughter!)

Finally, The Ghost at the Grand Hotel drifts back to rest after a good night's haunting, ending in a diminuendo to pianissimo.
