This peaceful jazz waltz arrangement of Silent Night is the simplified version of its Grade 3 sister piece and will suit established beginners at about the Grade 2 standard (ABRSM).
Silent Night was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg in Austria. Joseph Mohr provided the lyrics and I wonder if they knew just how popular their Christmas carol would become? Apparently, the version sung by Bing Crosby has become the third best-selling single of all time!
In this jazzy arrangement, the melody is accompanied by a swung ostinato in the left hand, which is a familiar figure in many blues waltzes. After a four bar introduction (repeated for each verse), the right hand presents the well-known melody and features a yummy suspended chord on the poco rit. for "Hea-ven-ly pea-ce...".
The sustain pedal comes in during the ending bars, or this can be simplified by only holding it down during bars 27-29.
This Christmas piano sheet music comes with play-along backing tracks (including a slow tempo version), and also features the Silent Night lyrics, so a little sing-along is always an option!
