Hot Potato is a bluesy pop shuffle in E major, inspired by Michael Jackson's rhythm and blues hit The Way You Make Me Feel.
This hot little number will suit pianists at about the Grade 5+ standard and features challenging rhythmic patterns with a 12-8 or triplet feel. However, for ease of reading it is written in 4-4 time with swung quavers :).
We warm up the oven with a little introduction, which is played rubato (with expressive and rhythmic freedom - rubato means 'stolen time' in Italian). Then... it's hot potatoes all the way at 120 bpm!
By the way, what do you get if you cross a sweet potato with a jazz musician?
A yam session... (groan... Sorry - couldn't resist it.)
The middle 'savoury filling' of Hot Potato modulates into the key of G major and is followed by a percussive section featuring triplets 'shared' between both hands.
Hot Potato comes with its own funky MP3 backing track that adds a fun new dimension once you've got the hang of playing the piece on its own. There's also a slow tempo practice backing to help you get up to speed.
Enjoy your Hot Potato!
